Type Of Trees: Austrian Pine (Pinus Nigra).
Reason For Removal: Outgrown their position.
Facts About Pinus Nigra:
This dark, rough looking, heavy branched tree reaches a height of around 100' (30m). The two in question were approximately 80' (25m). The cones on this tree when ripening are green and elongated. When mature they turn brown and more rounded, they take two and half years to open.
Charles Lawson (1794-1873) the Scottish nursery man after whom the widely planted Lawson Cypress is named, introduced the Austrian Pine to Britain in 1835. He suggested that it should be grown not only for ornament, but also as a plantation tree for it’s wood. However it was not a success as a timber tree because it is course and it’s heavy branches form large knots which weaken planks made form it, reducing it’s value. Where the branches are not at right angles to the trunk, the knots extend at an oblique angle into the tree, weakening the wood. The Austrian Pine is now not grown for timber and has been replaced in plantations by the finer branched Corsican Pine.
As an ornamental tree, Lawsons import has proved more successful. It can withstand exposure to salt winds and industrial pollution, so it’s often planted as a windbreak or screen and it flourishes on most dry soils, particularly those overlaying chalk.
Scope Of Works: Section fell, remove and grind out stumps.
Stage 1 – The two Pines were overhanging our clients property therefore a simple rigging or lowering system was employed, ensuring all dismantling operations were of a safe and controlled manner. Once all the over hanging crown was safely lowered and processed the next stage could continue.
Stage 2 – Now that the crown has gone the next main task is to section fell the remaining trunk in 4-5' pieces until such time that the remaining ‘stick’ is small enough to fell from ground level
Stage 3 – Processing of timber into manageable lengths
Stage 4 – Using a stump grinder grind out remaining trunk to below ground level so area can be seeded/turfed.
Stage 5 – Tidy, removing all arisings by use of rakes, shovels and finally a back pack blower leaving a clean and tidy site.
